After hitting a career low ranking of 334 and being overlooked for a Wimbledon wildcard, Liam Broady knew something needed to change. After some advice from Andy Murray, he is reaping the rewards as he prepares for another shot at SW19.
“I grinded Futures [third-tier tournaments] for another 10 years after that, and I’ve been playing Challengers [the tier below full tour level] now for almost 10 years as well.”
His method these days is “to make a lot balls”, a piece of tennis locker room parlance that means being extremely fit and always forcing your opponent to hit one more shot to win the point. “I probably served half as well as I do. I didn’t really play from the back with my forehand as well as I do now. That’s apart from the emotional and mental maturity that I’ve gained just having grown older.”What he means is he is tucked up in bed at a reasonable hour, which may sound basic, but wasn’t always the case.
