Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is ordering the citywide curfew for young people to be moved up to 10 p.m. on weekends following the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old at Millennium Park.
The curfew had previously been 11 p.m. for individuals ages 17 and under, but Lightfoot insisted the change was needed to help end the"pipeline of young people to the graveyard" amid rampant crime in the city."That is simply not smart, and it's definitely not safe, no matter the destination," Lightfoot said during a press conference Monday."It's not just because it's downtown. Our children need to be accompanied by adults. Period.
Lightfoot said she was troubled by the fact that some preteens, including 10- and 11-year-olds, have been traversing downtown Chicago at night without an adult supervisor. The announcement came at a press conference to address public safety concerns in light of the fatal shooting at Millennium Park Saturday night.
The teenager, identified as Seandell Holliday, was reportedly standing next to Chicago landmark"The Bean" when he was shot in the chest. A 17-year-old suspect was subsequently taken into custody and is being charged with second-degree murder, WGN9 reported. The shooting occurred during a chaotic scene in which a group of young people gathered near the park, according to police.
