Limerick City's emergency shelters faced an influx of people seeking refuge from freezing temperatures last night, leading to some individuals being turned away. Despite efforts to increase capacity, the demand for services exceeded the available resources.
Some individuals experiencing homelessness in Limerick City were turned away from emergency accommodations last night as sub-zero temperatures strained resources. Despite extended capacity through the winter bed and cold bed initiative, Novas, a dedicated charity serving Limerick, reported exceeding numbers at emergency shelters due to an increase in people seeking services.
Una Burns, Novas’ Head of Advocacy, told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that their outreach van saw fewer people than usual, with around 15 to 20 individuals presenting. She believes some may have sought shelter in advance. Novas, entirely reliant on donations and fundraising, operates a street outreach seven nights a week, supporting individuals who are rough sleeping or marginalized. The organization provides signposting to services and distributes sleeping bags to those in need
