Linebacker DJ Peevy says he really connected with USC head coach Lincoln Riley. Offensive tackle Jonah Rodriguez looks forward to working with Aztecs line coach Mike Goff.
In 1988, Lincoln cornerback Marcus Hopkins accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Southern California. He was the last Lincoln player to land a football scholarship to USC.
That 34-year window finally came to an end with outside linebacker DJ Peevy announcing he will attend USC. Peevy’s finalists included Oregon and Washington. “I really had a good connection with Coach Riley and the staff,” said Peevy. “Ever since they offered me, they’ve always been checking up on me, always treated me and my family with respect. Also, USC academics are probably one of the best in the world. While USC has risen to ninth in The Associated Press college football poll, the Trojans defense has been spotty, giving up 43 and 37 points the last two games.
Meanwhile, Madison offensive tackle Jonah Rodriguez is staying closer to home, announcing he has committed to San Diego State. Rodriguez was influenced by Aztecs offensive line coach Mike Goff. “He played 12 years in the NFL,” said the 6-foot-3½, 280-pound Rodriguez. “I feel he’s got what it takes to make me a better player, take me where I want to go and that’s the NFL.”
