Maureen Nolan, sister of the late singer Linda Nolan, described her funeral as a 'superstar's send-off', highlighting the overwhelming support and love shown by mourners who lined the streets of Blackpool.
Linda Nolan 's sister Maureen described her funeral as a 'superstar's send-off', sharing that their family felt immense pride as mourners lined the streets to pay their respects. Linda had previously expressed her wishes for her funeral, although her family chose not to discuss it during her final days in the hospital. Maureen explained that their late sister had carefully selected her pink sparkly coffin.
'Our auntie died two years ago, so we got a brochure for coffins and that one was on it,' she told the Sunday World. 'Linda said at the time, 'Oh, that’s mine! That’s gotta be mine!' So we’ve always remembered that it had to be that one.' Linda had also requested that attendees wear the traditional funeral color of black. Maureen recalled, 'She said she wanted everybody in black weeping and wailing, so we all wore black. She was so funny. She was making jokes right up to the end in the hospital room.' The singer admitted that she doesn't believe Linda fully accepted the reality of her impending death, mirroring the experience of their sister Bernie who passed away from breast cancer in 2013. 'You know what, like Bernie, no, I don’t think she did,' Maureen said. 'Right until her very last breath she thought something would work, and Bernie was the same. And I think it’s what kept them going for much longer than they should have. 'I never once in hospital said to her, 'Do you want to discuss your funeral plans?' because I thought, I’m not sure if she knows this is the end.' She didn’t want to accept it or talk about it, so I do think there was still a little bit of hope. 'We left her on the Monday night, and me and Coleen said, 'I think she’s going to pull through. She had perked up a little bit, but we now know that that is something that happens, that sometimes people do perk up before they go. 'So it was all the more of a shock when we got the call at three in the morning on Tuesday morning to say, 'you need to come back.' We were all there at the end… about 20 of us in this little room.' Hundreds of people lined the streets of Blackpool for Linda's funeral last month, with Maureen expressing her gratitude towards those who attended. 'I'll be eternally grateful to the people who came to Linda’s funeral and to Bernie’s funeral before that,' she stated. She continued, 'It was just so beautiful… people outside crying and saying 'thanks for the memories, we love your family, Linda was gorgeous.’ It absolutely made a big, big difference to us. 'We know Linda would have been so proud to see people on the streets… 'oh, this is for me!' 'It was a superstar's send-off. It really was, it was gorgeous. I think we did her proud. 'I miss Linda’s positivity. She was always so encouraging and supportive of us. Even in her final years she stayed positive. 'She used to say, 'you only have two choices, get out of bed or pull the covers over your head.' She chose to get out of bed and live to the full of her ability whatever life she had left.'
