Lindsay Hoyle's daughter Emma Fox launches bid to become her dad's neighbour as West Lancashire MP

The ring of hopefuls for a crunch Lancashire by-election dubbed a ‘referendum on fracking’ is growing.

“I possess a large and diverse skill set that I can bring to the role. My career has featured upper management for a large national company; I am a teacher, a vice-chair of school governors, a big Labour Party campaigner and organiser and a mother of two. All this, whilst being brought up by two long serving Labour MPs in the family who continually inspire me and show me the dedication and hard work necessary to deliver for constituents.

Like many of her rival contenders for the Labour selection, she opposes fracking and also proposals to build a medical waste incinerator in the West Lancs constituency at Bickerstaffe, due to be discussed at a meeting later this month at County Hall in Preston. On fracking, she told us: “There is too much risk to public health, the environment, water contamination, and fails to tackle climate change. There are cleaner and greener alternatives available.

The Liberal Democrats told LancsLive they would be standing a candidate. Liberal Democrat Energy Spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said: "The government's own experts have refused to say fracking is safe. That they choose to plough on regardless shows a callous disregard for our communities. If people suffer polluted water and dangerous earthquakes, this decision will prove unforgivable."

“We know we don't want it here in West Lancashire, we have been clear on that, but it feels like this is step one, the next step for them will be to do as they did with Whitemoss and just ride roughshod over local opinion.” Peter Cranie, chair of the North West Green Party, told LancsLive: "There are discussions going on in the party and as a former candidate for West Lancs and someone who works in the constituency, I would very much like us to have a strong candidate in place once that by-election is called.
