Dowdall was due to stand trial charged with the same offence but in October he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of facilitating the murder and is serving aGrehan: Gerard Hutch called to your house on the 12th of February and spoke to you. Dowdall says he was constantly being asked how Flat Cap was involved.Grehan asking Dowdall why he drove Gerry up north then. “You don’t run a glorified taxi business. You weren’t just a driver.”Grehan asks Dowdall how did he know of the person referred to as “We.” He says: "You seem to know We well". Dowdall says he knew him through a friend but not well.
Dowdall: “I met him in passing. He was involved in politics and I met him through that. I don’t know him.”Dowdall said he didn’t know him for that. Grehan then asked: Well then why did you go to him. Dowdall said he was told to. Grehan put it to him that the person who told him was Garda killer Pearse McAuley. Dowdall confirmed it is.“Why can’t you tell us? What’s the big secret?" Grehan asks about Dowdall’s meeting in Derry in Jan 2016.Grehan: “I think what you told us and what you told the court was that at the meeting you said happened in the park was that Mr Hutch asked you to contact your contacts up north.”Grehan said but independent of that Dowdall already had contact with people up north.
