The fire service received a large number of calls
People are being urged to avoid an area of Mansfield on Tuesday morning, June 6, after a fire broke out in the town centre in the early hours. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service received a number of calls from witnesses just after 1am as smoke could be seen coming from the area.
It was confirmed the fire involved a 'commercial building', with images from Ashfield Fire Station showing the fire has gutted a shop unit. A number of roads were also closed while the incident was dealt with. According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, Clumber Street remains partially blocked from St John Street to Toothill Lane. A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Our Joint Control Room is currently receiving a high number of calls about a building fire in Mansfield. Our firefighters are in attendance and are working to extinguish the fire. If you smell or see smoke, please keep windows closed.
At 5.30am, the spokesperson added: "Two fire engines are still in attendance at a commercial building fire on Clumber Street, Mansfield. Crews will remain on scene this morning to continue dampening down the fire. Please avoid the area if possible."
