Despite a dramatic comeback by Barcelona in their match against Benfica, Liverpool maintained their position at the top of the Champions League group with a 2-1 victory over Lille. The win extends their unbeaten streak in the competition to seven matches. Liverpool will secure the top spot with a point against PSV Eindhoven next week.
LIVERPOOL HEAD COCH Arne Slot was not too downbeat at not locking down top spot in the Champions League with a match to spare as his priority was to secure direct passage to the last 16.
“I think 18 points would have been enough to finish top eight but with 21 there is no discussion,” said Slot. “For me the most important thing is we have been able to skip a round.” Mohamed Salah opened the scoring to become the first Liverpool player to score 50 European goals.
