The Mathew Street festival wants to promote local talent

The Mathew Street Festival is returning this summer after an 11 year hiatus. The festival is a partnership between some of the original Mathew Street Festival organisers – Bill Heckle, Dave Jones, Alex McKechnie and Rick Allen – and Liverpool Celebrates, a collective of local organisers who've worked on Bongo's Bingo, Rewind and Kendal Calling.

Now, it appears that promise is being fulfilled. Two bands or artists are being offered the chance to perform in a paid slot and share the same stage as The Jacksons, Holly Johnson and the Lightning Seeds. Winners will be chosen by a judging panel featuring come of the city’s most well-respected people in music including Dave Monks from BBC introducing Merseyside, Mobo Award Winner Esco Williams, head of UNESCO City of Music Kevin McManus and Rheana Forrester, curator of The Narrative events for singers and songwriters.

Liam Spence, communications director at Liverpool Celebrates, said: “Liverpool is a city renowned for its musical heritage and there is so much incredible talent in every corner of the region.
