'I wouldn’t use anyone’s name because I couldn’t remember them' 🔴 Jane Buckels tells PMGallagher1 about her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s and the steps she’s taken to live life to the full
Climbing sand dunes in Namibia has been just one of many challenges Jane has completed since her diagnosis with early-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 57. I was born in 1957 and grew up in a Lancashire mill town with views of the Pennines. I started walking in the Peak District in my early teens, a time before special outdoor wear when you wore old clothes and a pakamac for a waterproof. I learned to map read by osmosis and eventually even acquired a cagoule.
My job entailed advising managers and organising testing, but I found that my ability to recall and plan effectively was diminished. I found that, where previously I could quote the necessary regulation, more and more frequently I would end up saying ‘I’ll let you know.’ I went to visit a school to talk about their fire risk assessment and took the wrong paperwork – I felt like an idiot. I spent a lot of time in the car driving between buildings and frequently got lost.
This was the jolt I needed, because I knew it was true. I Googled exercises for older people and found Jane Fonda’s over 50’s DVD, which starts with a very basic low impact routine aimed at improving balance. I quickly moved on and started walking on the roads around the village and the uphill gradually became easier. This was partly because I was fitter, but also because I was more careful about what I was eating and was losing weight.
Jane and her daughter, Emma, after the pair completed the Merthyr Half Mafrathon, to achieve her goal, but also to earn sponsorship money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
