Foreign Secretary was forced into a rapid u-turn after a Tory backlash over policy which would have seen public sector pay cut in the north
abandoned her pledge to cut £8.8bn from public sector pay outside London after just 12 hours on Tuesday following outrage from senior Conservatives that it would amount to “levelling down” and would be a “pay cut for Northerners”.
But the small print of the plans released on Monday night referred to extending savings in the civil service to all public sector workers. On Tuesday evening an MP who is supporting Ms Truss cast doubt on whether policies should be unveiled at all during the frenetic campaign, and that ideas should go through a proper consultation process.
