Liz Truss's U-turn casts doubts that she'll be 'clean break' from Johnson despite poll lead. 🔴 The Tory leadership frontrunner has hit her first major pothole with plan to cut regional public sector worker pay.
in the battle to replace Boris Johnson, according to a latest YouGov poll, with 60 per cent of Tory members backing her for the top job.
The move, which her team claimed would eventually save the Exchequer £8.8bn, appeared to explode the Government’s flagship levelling up promise at a stroke. Indeed, there are fears that such an unforced error could merely be a portent of things to come. Tory MPs had become increasingly exasperated by repeated policy announcements followed by screeching u-turns that pockmarked the Johnson government. This is despite the Truss press release stating the regional pay policy could “save up to £8.8 billion per year”.
