36 candidates competing for 18 seats
Roads are driving the local election agenda in Co Cavan, where 36 candidates are contesting 18 seats spread across three local election areas.
Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael each have seven sitting councillors on the local authority, with the latter opting to run just seven candidates this time around. This leaves no room for gains in a county where the party can point to millions of euro being pumped into communities by local TD and Minister for Rural Development Heather Humphreys.
The Green Party is running a candidate here for the first time. Kevin Murphy, an environmental research engineer from Swanlinbar, is on the ballot in Cavan-Belturbet. Labour’s Liam van der Spek will be hoping to win the party’s first seat in Cavan since local authorities were reconfigured.
