111 candidates competing for 40 seats
The 40 seats on South Dublin County Council, spread across seven local electoral areas, are being contested by 111 candidates.
Fianna Fáil emerged as the largest party here after 2019′s local elections, taking eight seats, followed by Fine Gael and Sinn Féin . Independent candidates won nine seats on the local authority which covers areas such as Clondalkin, Firhouse, Lucan, Palmerstown, Rathfarnam, Templeogue and Tallaght.
On the doorsteps, candidates say, voters are raising housing, traffic congestion, antisocial behaviour, as well as childcare and health services. Candidates in Tallaght say a site earmarked for international protection applicants in the area, St John’s House, has regularly been raised. Gardaí are investigating a fire at the vacant property on High Street.
Some of the councillors elected five years ago have since become TDs, including Fine Gael’s Emer Higgins, now a Minister of State, the Green Party’s Francis Noel Duffy, and Sinn Féin’s Mark Ward.Former MMA fighter Paddy Holohan is running again, though this time as an Independent candidate, having left Sinn Féin in early 2021. He was suspended from the party in January 2020 over comments made on podcast about underage girls blackmailing men.
Sinn Féin’s performance will be one to watch, given the party lost three seats last time round and no longer has Holohan on the ticket.
