, J Smith-Cameron as Gerri, Justine Lupe as Willa), the corporate world of Waystar Royco and the old-fashioned outlook of Logan has long underlined the plot and the characters’ interactions with an insidious misogyny.
It was there in large-scale incidents such as the cruises scandal, in which Waystar covered up numerous sex crimes by senior members of staff. It was there, subtly, in Logan’s dalliances with Rhea, his mistress and potential CEO, in season two. It’s there in Shiv’s not-quite-good-enough, not-quite-experienced-enough, always on the back-foot plight. Most recently, the casual sexism of the boardroom was exposed in episode eight, which followed election night in the ATN newsroom.
Episode nine, though, was Logan’s funeral – and it’s no coincidence that women seemed to be making moves., Roman and Shiv’s mother, Lady Caroline , returned in this episode, and instigated what some viewers have described as the “unionisation” of Logan’s wives. She marched up to Kerry, his most recent assistant and mistress, and introduced her to a woman named Sally-Ann, before escorting both of them over to Marcia and telling her that “Sally-Anne was my Kerry” .
We also saw Kendall lose his temper with his assistant, Jess. A fan favourite character, she has always been docile and obedient to Kendall, phoning in all his craziest commands, but the minute she stood up to him and stopped servicing his every need, he couldn’t hack it. Just like his father, he couldn’t hold her in his head as a “full person”.All of these examples are small expressions of power from women who have historically been, directly or indirectly, at Logan’s behest.
