Backed by billionaire Michelle Kang and featuring Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, London City Lionesses beat Manchester United 2-1 to launch their bid to become the first independent club to win the Women's Super League.

London City Lionesses made a striking opening statement in their pursuit of becoming the first independent club to win the Women's Super League, defeating Manchester United 2-1 at their modest Bromley home.

Backed by billionaire American businesswoman Michelle Kang, the London-based side has undergone a dramatic transformation since finishing sixth in their debut top-flight campaign last season. That finish left them behind the established elite of Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham. Determined to reshape that hierarchy, Kang has invested heavily in elite talent, headlined by two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, former England goalkeeper Mary Earps and French international Kadidiatou Diani, alongside several other prominent players.

The opening night at a compact 6,000-capacity venue in south-west London suggested a genuine new force may be emerging in the women's game, with Putellas dictating play and the home side largely controlling the tempo from the outset. An early own goal from Julia Zigiotti provided the perfect platform for the Lionesses, who then patiently worked through United's resistance without overextending.

The decisive moment arrived eight minutes from time, when Daniëlle van de Donk produced a brilliant back-heeled finish into the far corner to extend the lead and seemingly seal the result. United responded only with virtually the final kick of the match through Simi Awujo, whose consolation goal did little to dampen the mood around Kang's ambitious project.

The result, achieved against a Manchester United side accustomed to operating near the top of the division, underlined the scale of the shift the Lionesses are attempting in only their second season among the elite. Kang's long-term aim is clear: to add the London City Lionesses to a winners' list that has so far featured only Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Her strategy of recruiting globally recognised stars and pairing them with a growing core of domestic talent signals an intent not merely to compete but to redefine expectations for a club operating outside the traditional giants. With the opening victory already in hand and momentum building, attention will turn to whether the Lionesses can sustain this level against the established powers across the remainder of the campaign
