Green Party councillor Caroline Conroy unrepentant about ending traditional live crib outside the mayoral residence

Marie and Seán O’Connor from Donaghmede were also missing the animals. “It’s a tradition isn’t it,” Marie said. “But maybe it is because we are an older generation and we can remember when people used to have pigs in their back gardens.”

Ms Conroy said she was delighted with how the Mansion House looked. “I wanted to do something different and I think it’s turned out fantastic. It’s magical and it actually adds a bit more excitement to Christmas and to bring people into the city and that’s what I wanted to do.” This year all the squirrels, nutcracker statues and decorative tree props were custom-made by artists in ReCreate, using only reused materials collected from businesses.
