An Odeon was opened in 1964 in the shopping centre but closed after just over a decade
People living in Leeds between the 1960's and 1970's might remember the vast amount of cinema choice.
The picture house was open from 1964 and was the first cinema built in Leeds since the 1930's. Sadly it closed after 13 years in 1977 after being left strangely empty. The entrance was on the second floor of the Merrion Centre, opposite to what is now Morrison’s supermarket. The cinema was accessed by going upstairs, and then up a smaller set of its own stairs.
Now on the outside of the former cinema doors are posters. The cinema is featured in an interactive heritage project presented by Hyde Park Picture House. The showcase remembers the lost cinemas of Leeds, and is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Leeds Inspired.
