A robot-powered logistics startup led by the founder of Borders Books is trying to raise $100 million to take on Amazon and Instacart in the grocery delivery business

As a result, robotics will likely be a requirement for grocery delivery companies to succeed, said Haomiao Huang, a partner at Kleiner Perkins. Huang said several of the robotics companies in his portfolio had been in touch with delivery startups about possible partnerships.

HDS will compete with established players. One of the biggest names in same-day grocery delivery, Amazon, continues to rely on humans to walk the aisles of grocery stores picking items off shelves. In its warehouses, the e-commerce giant has been using more , but the company still needs human workers to do a lot of the picking and packing.

Robotic fulfillment may not be enough to solve all of the cost challenges associated with grocery delivery, including customer acquisition and product selection, Shahin Farshchi, a partner at Lux Capital, told Insider. "If you take a business model that's not profitable or not viable and just throw computers at it, you're not necessarily going to make it work," he said

HDS is attempting to address at least one of these challenges. Robot-powered grocery warehouses tend tend to have a capacity of no more than 10,000 to 20,000 unique products, or SKUs, experts said. HDS claims its technology, called RoboFS, has a capacity of 100,000 SKUs, according to the pitch deck.
