ThorLoveAndThunder co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has responded to Valkyrie's very brief New Asgard storyline, confirming it was always that short. “Those [script] choices were really more on the Kevin/Taika side than on the me side.”
Co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson reveals Valkyrie’s story in Thor: Love and Thunder was always relatively condensed. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Love and Thunder picks up with its titular character aboard the Benatar alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy. The film is inspired by Jason Aaron’s Thor run, which sees Jane Foster transform into the Mighty Thor.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Valkyrie was set up as the king of New Asgard in the final moments of Endgame. However, Love and Thunder finds the new king struggling with her administrative duties and somewhat pining for the battlefield. That is until, of course, Thor arrives in New Asgard to save the children of the city from Gorr's attack, and enlists Jane and Valkyrie to help him defeat the villain.
“The New Asgard part of Valkyrie’s story is maybe a little bit condensed, but it really was what was in the earlier drafts. You know, the script was very long and the movie is not as long as the script. But those choices were really more on the Kevin/Taika side than on the me side.” Influenced by Shakespeare, Thompson’s Valkyrie was one of the most beloved aspects of Thor: Ragnarok and welcome addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In 2019, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed Valkyrie as the MCU’s first LGBTQ+ hero, leaving audiences to expect some romance for her in Love and Thunder .
Although viewers got to see her flirt and wield Zeus’ thunderbolt, Valkyrie wasn’t granted a romantic subplot in Love and Thunder. Outside of monetizing New Asgard as a tourist attraction, little is known about Valkyrie’s life in New Asgard. Regardless, she remains one of the most popular characters in Love and Thunder and the MCU, and Marvel Studios may award her a solo film or Disney+ series to further flesh out these points that some viewers found lacking.
