A committee was told out of almost a million spent by the council on community grants in 2020/2021 – Lower North Belfast received only £9,000
Lower North Belfast is lagging well behind other parts of the city in receiving community grants due to a lack of expertise in applications, a loacal councillor has claimed.
Councillor Cobain told the chamber: “All of these groups I am sure deserve what they are getting. They are all very professional, and clearly have cohesion in their community. He added: “There is no way in Lower North Belfast the groups there are ever going to get themselves to a level where they can compete with more professional groups. The open call is fine, and is the proper way to do things, but it does favour those groups that are organised, and disadvantages those that are not.
