BonesAndAll has everything: love, loss, and cannibalism. Director Luca Guadagnino spoke to VF about the soft, affecting love story beneath the film’s harsh exterior.
Timothée found a lot of fame and opportunity off ofNow he comes back into this movie relatively seasoned, relatively known. What was different about him? How did this experience compare toI think Timothée was almost like a kamikaze. He was ready to explode and he was ready to go in every direction, with a very strong sense of drive.
To that point, your work does tend to live on in different ways. I know you’re still talking about thecoming, which made me very personally happy. What can you tell me about that new cut? So I got a great honor at the Göteborg Film Festival. They gave me this lifetime achievement, which embarrasses me to say. I was 50 then. [] But I love Göteborg so I said, “Okay, I’ll do it.” They wanted to make a retrospective of my movies and I said, “No, that’s not possible, because I don’t have a body of work that can make into a retrospective yet!” I said, “Why don’t we show you a little treat?” With my editorUsually I am not very sentimental about the early cuts of my movies.
They saw it and they said, “Oh, my God, you are completely right. We missed it then.” We presented at the Göteborg with no effects, no mix, nothing. But we knew that we were going to then finish it in order to rerelease it somehow. Now we are in the process of finalizing it. It’s going to take a few months, because we need to scan, make the effects, new songs, new mix, new everything.
