The worker suffered minor cuts to his legs

A rail worker was lucky to escape serious injury after being trapped between two pieces of railway equipment while carrying out maintenance work on the Cork-Cobh/Midleton line last month.

The RAIU said the worker suffered minor cuts to his legs and sought medical attention the following day.

The movement lasted another four seconds before coming to a stop, while the injured party managed to escape from between the two pieces of equipment. Rail investigators also noted that a drawbar used for coupling road rail vehicles to trailers requires a person to be between a stationary trailer and a moving road rail vehicle during the coupling process. The RAIU said the use of such draw bars “by their nature introduces a risk of collisions with ground operatives.”
