Mitchell suits his new role as an accidental murder detective in this endearing - if a little PG - police drama with a twist

gets to sport a corduroy jacket – replete with pens in the breast pocket – in practically every scene of each of the six one-hour episodes.is a police procedural with a twist. Ludwig leads a happily solitary life, which is spectacularly disrupted when his identical twin brother, Cambridge police detective James, goes missing. His vanishing can be solved – so his wife Lucy believes – by Ludwig impersonating his twin, and infiltrating the police station to search for clues.

There’s an intrinsic problem with being identical, however. Ludwig immediately finds himself mistaken for James by the latter’s colleagues, and is swiftly swept up in a murder case. He’s appalled, of course, and horrified – he isn’t used to inspecting corpses first thing on a Monday morning. But, due to his clever mind, he finds that he can crack the case without breaking sweat. His fellow detectives are impressed.

Each episode unfolds like an Agatha Christie novel by way of Cluedo, with top notes of Mr Bean. A murder is committed, and the culprit must be found – by Ludwig, no doubt – within the hour. By episode three, he’s grown confident in his abilities. “Do you know who the murderer is?” his superintendent asks him. “Yes, and I should be able to get a confession in a minute,” comes the response.

The whole thing is enlivened by some top-notch guest appearances – Sir Derek Jacobi, Felicity Kendal, a bewildered Karl Pilkington – and while it’s true that sometimes the series is so light it’s in danger of floating clean away, its very undemanding nature is perhaps its key asset. It might not be hard-hitting, but it’s certainly charming.
