Luke Humphries has lost significant weight since the 2021 lockdown, leading to improved performance and his win in the World Darts Championship. The 29-year-old, now world No.1, attributes part of his success to his focus on fitness following a scary incident during a game.
Luke Humphries has revealed that his impressive weight-loss journey began after he felt like he was having a heart attack at the oche. Humphries has lost four stone since the 2021 Covid-19 lockdown and has been rewarded with improved performances.
The 29-year-old beat Luke Littler to win the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in January and is the world No.1. ‘Cool Hand’ has won 18 senior PDC titles and is the dominant force in the sport – and he credits part of his success to his focus on fitness. Humphries has shed the pounds over the past few years following a scary incident in a game against James Wade at the German Darts Open. “I think it was the European Tour that was the first instance where I first really started to notice something was wrong,” he explained in Sky Sports' Game of Throws documentary. "The game against James Wade, I managed to get up there and get into a 5-2 lead, but I couldn't quite focus on what was going on. “I'd never felt my heartbeat and then I felt like it was going a bit fast. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. It really scared me. I couldn't wait to get off the stage. I was ready to quit the state I was in.” That incident proved to be a major turning point for Humphries, who now prepares for major tournaments like an athlete. He feels that having a healthier lifestyle has improved his focus at the oche and improved his self confidence. “Subconsciously I was anxious about being overweight, worried about people looking at me, stuff like that,” he added. “The fatigue, the tiredness, all the negative thoughts. “It felt like being overweight was the thing that was really stopping me, because I had all this talent, all this ambition, but I couldn't channel it in the right ways. I really had to work hard to get healthier. “Since I lost the weight I've had a much clearer mind. That healthier body really gave me a lot more belief. I felt much more confident in myself – just focused.” Back in February 2021, Humphries tweeted: "Really working hard towards the new darting season in a few weeks! Lost over 2 stone since Christmas … on reflection big changes were needed to myself to get to that next level in my career! I’m practising harder than I ever have.. Hoping the rewards will pay off this year!" Humphries has certainly seen the benefits since making lifestyle changes, having won a glut of trophies over the past two years. He is now beginning to look ahead to the defence of his world crown next month, with an opening match against Thibault Tricole or Joe Comito on the cards.
