For anyone who isn’t a regular viewer, pro wrestling likely conjures images of musclebound giants like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and John Cena, or 80s icons like Macho Man and Ultimate Warrior. Those giants still exist, but if you turn on Netflix’s WWE Raw today, you’re just as likely to see a much different style of wrestler – including the 5’6” Dubliner Lyra Valkyria.
As is the case with many who find themselves at the pinnacle of the wrestling business, Lyra Valkyria’s journey to ‘overnight success’ has been a decade’s worth of hard work, plying her craft on the independent wrestling circuit and learning everything from in-ring technique to crowd psychology along the way. It hasn’t always been glamorous.
“I feel like we've always been, regardless of what the show is, give your all, give your everything, but there is a heightened sense of the platform having gotten so, so big,” Valkyria says. “This is possibly the biggest, most dramatic change that WWE has ever seen. “I actually met Bayley before,” she recalls. “WWE came to Dublin I went to a meet and greet in Smyth’s. I was already wrestling at this point, and I remember we were at the back of the line, and she asked us to wait behind and spoke to me after. I think I'd had a match that I wasn't happy with, and the time she gave me and the way she spoke to me was so cool. It just picked me up so much after a bad day.
