Mac Jones and the Patriots' offense looks revitalized so far under Bill O'Brien. And could more help be on the way? A source tells jeffphowe that there’s optimism DeAndre Hopkins and New England can reach an agreement on a deal. More:
There were more short, easy completions Monday, but that appeared to be an attempt to take advantage of the defense’s changing zone looks. In that respect, they did a good job of identifying the holes in the zone against a defense that wasn’t shy about spinning the dial with its calls.
Interestingly, Jones completed eight checkdowns Monday. And while checkdowns aren’t necessarily bad plays — sometimes they’re perfectly fine, or even theplay — that was a lot for one practice. But he came back Tuesday and didn’t throw a single checkdown pass, showing immediate improvement in that regard.
It wasn’t all great, to be sure. Jones threw a pair of interceptions Tuesday, the first of which had too much air and not enough distance to a wide-open Henry deep down the right sideline. Cornerbackmade an incredible play to peel off his assignment and hustle in front of Henry for the pick. The quarterback’s second miscue was to Bourne in tight coverage over the middle.
The connection with Parker sputtered Monday with three completions and three batted passes, but they were much better Tuesday . It was the opposite with Bourne, who thrived Monday on those shorter passes against the zone but didn’t catch either of his two targets Tuesday. Both Parker and Bourne reported in better shape this offseason than they did last year, according to the same people close to the team. That should help each receiver rebound from a forgettable 2022. Thornton, their 2022 second-round pick, practiced with more confidence and system awareness earlier in the spring but wasn’t able to carry that momentum through minicamp due to an injury.
