President Macron's alliance loses its majority in French parliament while far-right scores a historic success in legislative elections, cementing its rise from fringe status to mainstream opposition

There is no set script in France for how things will now unfold as Macron and his centrist Ensemble bloc seek a way forward to avoid paralysis.

The NUPES left-wing coalition won 135 seats and the far-right National Rally 89 seats, according to an AFP news agency count based on the results published by the ministry. The strong performance of both Marine Le Pen's National Rally and NUPES, led by hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, is expected to make it harder for Macron to implement the agenda he was reelected on in May, including tax cuts and raising France’s retirement age from 62 to 65.

There could now potentially be weeks of political deadlock as the president seeks to reach out to new parties.
