Warhawks senior is 280-pound presence on offensive line for No. 1 team in county
A local TV crew showed up at Madison High, talent and camera in hand, on campus to produce a feature about Warhawks offensive tackle Jonah Rodriguez.“He hates publicity,” said Madison head coach Rick Jackson.There’s one problem with Rodriguez’s reticence for attention. He’s so good — a starter since his freshman season, first team All-CIF as a junior and the most highly recruited player on No. 1-ranked Madison — that, like it or not, the attention comes his way.
“Usually every fourth or fifth play’s going away from them and they’ll say, ‘I can chill on this one.’ Not Jonah. He’s pretty much go time.”season as Madison’s head coach. “He wants to demoralize you. He’s got that ‘it’ factor. He wants to punish you. It’s not that he’s a mean kid. you can tell he’s got that edge to him.Sitting on Madison’s home bench during a break in a toasty practice this week, Rodriguez at first had a difficult time explaining the root of his aggressiveness.
Rodriguez lines up at left tackle, regarded as the most important offensive line position on teams that frequently pass. . Most quarterbacks are right-handed and the left tackle protects his blind side, where strip sacks and turnovers are often forced. He said one of the first things college recruiters notice about him are his catcher’s-mitt-sized hands.Watching video, Madison’s players are entertained watching Rodriguez dominate some opponents. Said defensive end Zion Watson, “We like to see, over the course of time, how demeaning the guy can get. We like to see how he sucks the life out of somebody.”
