Magnet fishing exploded in popularity. What's the bait? A big magnet. What's the catch? Bicycles, shopping carts, a toilet.

BERLIN—Bored early in the pandemic, Constantin Chiteala went with a few friends to a nearby lake, tied a $6 magnet to a rope, tossed it into the water and pulled out a bicycle.“We’re having a little adventure,” Mr. Chiteala, 34 years old, said, ”and then also doing something for the environment.”

In Scotland, officials struck a deal late last year to open Edinburgh’s canals to magnet fishing—with strict rules about safety and waste disposal. Other British waterways are still officially off-limits, though many remain popular magnet fishing holes anyhow. When Mr. Chiteala and his friends began magnet fishing last May, after seeing it on YouTube, they tried to clean up after themselves.

Now, when they find sensitive items, such as a safe or a gun, they call the police. Otherwise, they call the sanitation department and tell them where the trash is piled, so they can send a truck. With more than 50,000 YouTube followers, Nils Lange and Tobias Schiller are Germany’s most popular magnet fishers. But at age 17, they have been too young to drive a car themselves.
