Avoid the area if you can
The huge fire in Ranskill, near Retford, has been declared a 'major incident'. The large-scale incident, which at its peak could be seen from miles around, has involved thousands of tyres and several diesel tanks.
Scrap vehicles also caught fire and the incident caused thick, black smoke to billow into the sky. Fire crews are expected to remain at the scene over the weekend - and it has since been declared a 'major incident'. In an update at around 6.30pm on Friday , Incident Commander Andy Macey reiterated the message in asking people to avoid the area. He said:"We are going to be here all weekend so we are asking you to stay away from the area all weekend."And if you are in the vicinity of smoking, please stay indoors with your windows and doors shut." As many as 14 fire engines were called to the incident in Station Road before midday on Friday.
In a statement on Facebook, officials from Ashfield Fire Station wrote:"Firefighters from Ashfield are in attendance at an industrial fire, thousands of tyres and several diesel tanks are on fire. We also have firefighters from Ashfield crewing the High Volume Pump at this incident."
