The IMO said that the ongoing recruitment freeze means junior doctors, also known as non-consultant hospital doctors, are being forced to work even longer hours and additional shifts at “very short notice”

Eight in 10 junior doctors in Ireland say they routinely work over 48 hours a week, as the Irish Medical Organisation has warned a “systemic change” is needed.

It added: “This pressure is exacerbating an already dismal working environment, which routinely sees NCHDs obliged to work excess hours in contravention of the European working time directive.”READ MORE: Woman raped at house party says she has been made feel like 'a prisoner in my own life' The statement comes on changeover day, which sees junior doctors rotate to new hospitals for either three, six or 12 months, and the first working day for newly-qualified doctors.
