The murder of Nicolette Ghirxi by her ex-partner, Edward Johnston, in Malta last year has led to a call for major changes in how domestic violence cases are handled on the island.
The murder by an Irishman of his ex-partner in Malta last year must see a major overhaul of how domestic violence cases are handled there, a commission of inquiry has ruled.
Online stock trader Johnston had a history of confrontations with the law and had been arrested by police in Liverpool for brandishing a replica gun in 2012. It issued 12 recommendations, including standard risk assessments of all complainants of domestic violence, plus an increase in the number of magistrates handling such cases and specialised lessons on the topic in schools.
