A man in his 40s has been arrested by Gardai in connection with the fatal hit-and-run collision that claimed the life of a young mother in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick.

Gardai investigating the death of a young mother killed in a hit and run collision in Co Limerick have arrested a man and are examining a van. Marguerita Sheridan who was in her 20s and from Rathkeale, died after a van ploughed into a set of gates she was standing beside. The driver did not stop to render assistance and fled the scene. The fatal collision occurred at the entrance to a property located in Rathkeale town centre on Saturday afternoon, December 21.

The deceased lady had given birth to her first child, a son, three weeks ago. A garda spokesman said: 'Gardaí have arrested a man, aged in his 40s, as part of the investigation into the fatal incident in Rathkeale Co. Limerick on Saturday 21st December 2024. 'A van believed to have been involved in this incident has been recovered by Gardaí and will be subject to a technical examination. The man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in Co. Limerick. 'Gardaí continue to appeal for any witnesses to this incident to come forward. Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were in the Rathkeale area in Co. Limerick between 11:30am and 1:00pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí. 'Anyone with any information is asked to contact Rathkeale Garda Station on 069 63222, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station. Investigations are ongoing.' Friends of the deceased paid online tributes to Ms Sheridan, with one describing her as a “beautiful, intelligent young lady”. A family friend wrote: “RIP, such a lovely girl, gone too soon.” Another commented to Ms Sheridan’s father John Sheridan: “Sorry for ur loss john may she get the best bed in heave
