A bomb disposal unit is en route

A road in the city centre has been closed off.

A road between High Street and Ciaran Street in Kilkenny City Centre, minutes from MacDonagh train station, has been closed off this morning. It is believed that there is a suspect device at the scene, and an explosive ordnance disposal unit is confirmed to be en route. Local diversions are in place while authorities deal with the incident.

A Garda spokesperson told JOE:"Gardaí in Kilkenny are at the scene of an incident this morning 16 May, 2019 at ‘Butterslip’ between High Street and Ciaran Street." It was further confirmed that a man in his late 50s has been arrested as a result of a follow-up search, and he is currently being detained under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, 1939.
