A man has been arrested by Gardaí in connection with a serious assault in Limerick that left hip-hop artist and dancer Tobi Omoteso with life-altering injuries, including partial blindness. The attack occurred as Omoteso prepared for his annual Hip Hop and Street Dance Festival. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support his medical expenses.
Gardaí have arrested a man as part of an investigation into an alleged Limerick assault that left a well-known hip-hop artist with horrific injuries. Limerick dancer Tobi Omoteso was readying for another iteration of the Treaty City’s Top 8 Hip Hop and Street Dance Festival on Saturday, March 28, when an attack left the festival co-founder partially blind with permanent damage to his vision .
'We were supposed to be celebrating,' Tobi said following the attack. 'We had just finished packing the car, the seats heavy with gear and equipment for the fifth edition of our Hip-hop and Streetdance community festival in Limerick that I co-founded and been working in across Ireland for over 12 years.
Tobi recounted how as he attempted to leave his estate with a car packed with equipment, another man was sitting waiting in his car at the exit, 'carelessly' parked with his 'tires on the footpath, trapping traffic and creating a chaos in an already small space', with road works. The man then allegedly tailed Tobi through the city, chasing him toward a roundabout where he forced his way in front of Tobi, stepping out of a vehicle wielding a wooden bat.
The assailant allegedly began to beat Tobi’s car, striking and shattering the driver’s side window with the wooden bat which exploded into shards of glass. The glass then sprayed across Tobi’s face and buried themselves deep into both of his eyes. Tobi is facing a 'long, agonising road of surgeries just to cling to a fraction of the vision he once took for granted'. A GoFundMe was launched following the attack, raising €72,385 of the €80,000 target.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: 'Gardaí investigating an incident of serious assault, which occurred in the Old Cratloe Road area of Limerick city on Saturday, 28 March, at approximately 10:30 am have arrested a male in relation to this investigation today, Tuesday, 28 April.
'The male in his 20s was conveyed to a Garda Station in Co. Limerick. He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations are ongoing.
