Manchester City are set to begin defending their Champions League crown after winning the treble last season
Rodri’s goal proved to be the difference on that unforgettable night in Istanbul as City finally got their hands on the most treasured prize in European club football. It had been a long time coming for Pep Guardiola’s side, who signed off last season with a treble and ended the talk of being unable to get over that final continental hurdle.
“There are teams that win the Champions League that disappear - we have to avoid that. Knowing me, that won't happen. It's a big relief for the club, for the institution to win this trophy. Finally people won't ask me if I'm going to win the Champions League or not.” That is not to say that City will remain content after scaling the mountain. De Bruyne, himself, mentioned feeling 'empty' after finally achieving the impossible. When asked how the team would motivate themselves for the current campaign, Phil Foden provided the answer.
With a favourable group, Guardiola’s side may be provided with a simple path to the knockout stages and find themselves only a few steps away from ultimately defending their crown. Back in June, Guardiola was asked about City’s ability to surpass Real Madrid’s record total of 14 European Cups.
