A 52-year-old man has admitted killing his NHS nurse wife and her two young children in Kettering last December. Saju Chelavalel appeared at Northampton Crown Court today, Wednesday, April 5, where he entered a guilty plea to the murder of 35-year-old Anju Ashok and her two young children, Jeeva Saju, 6, and Janvi Saju, 4.
Ms Ashok died at the scene and the two children died later in Kettering General Hospital. A forensic post-mortem examination at Leicester Royal Infirmary concluded that all three died of asphyxiation.Chelavalel was arrested the same day. He was later charged with the family's murder on December 17. Defence barrister George Carter Stephenson KC told the judge, His Honour Judge David Herbert KC, there had been "long discussions in relation to pleas." Chelavalel was remanded back into custody.
DI Simon Barnes of Northants Police confirmed to the press before the hearing that Chelavalel was the biological father of Jeeva and Janvi and the husband of Ms Ashok. The family are thought to have travelled to the UK from Kerala, India only months before their deaths. Ms Ashok is believed to have travelled to become an NHS nurse in early 2022, with her two young children joining her in September.
