Emergency services fought to free the man but he later died at the scene in London's West End.

Firefighters attend the incident outside the Palace Theatre in Cambridge Circus. A worker has died after being crushed while he was carrying out maintenance beneath a pop-up urinal in central London, the Metropolitan Police has said.

Emergency services had fought to free the man, who was working on a telescopic urinal – a type of pop-up urinal, which is stored underground during the day and rises to the ground at night – when he became trapped. Police, fire crews, paramedics and air ambulance workers were sent to the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road at 1.05pm.
