Last Friday, Ryan Murphy, 19, of Curragh Plains, Kildare, who had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, was jailed for five years.
Speaking about his son’s last moments, Edward Gibbons said: “Our family had the liberty of seeing the footage privately, probably a couple of weeks say before seeing it live in court - but just as harrowing seeing it again.
“Seeing Ryan’s final moments, it was devastating, so it was. Just everything that happened. ” He said the CCTV showed Ryan didn’t lash out and just had his hands up in a bid to protect himself. Edward said he often wonders what was going through his son’s head.
He said: “What went through our heads was ‘was he afraid? ’” Before adding: “His last words were ‘sorry, sorry’ and then he was struck and within milliseconds, he died, he died of a heart attack from the force of the punches. ” Meanwhile, his devastated mum, Elaine, said the only reason she decided to watch the harrowing footage was to see Ryan one last time.
Last Friday, the court heard Murphy was travelling home on a bus with pals after a night out, and Ryan asked them to be quieter. A verbal altercation ensued before Murphy grabbed Ryan’s hoodie, causing the bus driver and other passengers to intervene. Ryan got off at an earlier stop than Murphy. Murphy then got off the bus a short time later and went back and found Ryan.
This is when the altercation, which led to Ryan’s death, took place. Ryan’s mum explained she received a phone call from Gardai in Newbridge and said her son had been in an accident. She said she nor Edward knew what had happened to their son at that stage. Describing what she saw when she got to Naas Hospital, Elaine said: “We thought Ryan had fallen or hit his head or he had walked out in front of a car.
“We weren’t expecting to see what we had seen when we had walked into Naas hospital. He was on life support, he was hooked up to machines, there were doctors and nurses all around him. We were standing there in disbelief because we didn’t know what had happened. ” Elaine said the following afternoon, they were told by Gardai that Ryan had been attacked, and they were left in shock.
Edward said the full events of the night weren’t laid bare until around seven months after the attack. Speaking about her son, Elaine said: “Ryan was 29 years old, he was a happy, content, loving person … family and friends always came first for Ryan. He’d give you the shirt off his back. ”They said Ryan would have turned 30 on May 28.
The family had a small celebration and released some balloons to mark the occasion. They also said they didn’t celebrate Christmas last year as their emotions were too raw. Elaine said: “He was the heart of our family. ”
