Gardai and emergency services attended the scene following reports of a medical emergency in the Kryl's Quay area of the city shortly before 3pm on Friday, January 17. Cork Beo reports that a male was found unresponsive and despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The body was transferred to the morgue at Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem will be conducted in due course. Emergency services were on the scene until around 6pm this evening. The tragic discovery came mere hours after the body of a young man was discovered in Cork city's main public park, Fitzgerald's Park, on Friday morning. It is believed the man, who was in his 20s, had been dead inside a portaloo close by the main entrance to Fitzgerald's park for several hours. According to CorkBeo, the remains of a kit used by intravenous drug users and a pamphlet for the main Cork needle exchange programme were found in a portaloo in the area where the body was found. Charities working with drug users in Cork were told in December that it would be at least a year and probably more before a supervised injection facility, similar to one recently opened in Dublin, would come to Cork. Calls for such a centre in the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland have been growing ever since it was proposed almost ten years ago.
