The jury took just 20 minutes to return a unanimously guilty verdict
The jury at Preston Crown Court took just 20 minutes to find Dudley Payne, 30, unanimously guilty of animal cruelty. Rocko, an American Bully, suffered severe head trauma, a ruptured liver, cigarette burns to his groin, a partial fracture to his hip and scratches to his body.
From the witness box, Payne said he had gone to work at 8:30am that morning, leaving Rocko in his crate. He returned at 8:30pm and opened the cage to let the puppy out. He said the dog had access to food and water but had not been out to use the toilet or had any accidents in the crate. “You have to look at the injuries as a whole”, he said. “When you bring into play the cigarette burns, I find the CPR scenario difficult to accept.”
When the vet saw the extent of Rocko’s injuries he asked for a post-mortem, which Payne agreed to - although Mr Wilson paid the fee. When the results came back, the vet made a report to the RSPCA and Payne was questioned by Inspector Emma Dingley.
