Alleged mob believed Christopher Hughes had raped a teenage girl - but prosecutor tells jury there was no evidence he had done so

A 37-year-old man hacked to death after being relentlessly hunted by a vigilante gang suffered 'an excruciating ordeal', a jury heard yesterday .

Balbas, 30, of Matheson Drive, Worsley Hall, Wigan, has admitted the kidnapping, audaciously carried out in broad day light in front of witnesses, before the trial began and during the trial he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of murder. A tenth man, Michael Gibbons, 47, of Bulteel Street, Wigan, denies two charges of perverting the course of justice in the aftermath of the murder. He is alleged to have provided false information to the police and helped O’Neill Davey to dispose of the Audi.

Mr Hughes had told friends on the day of his death that he was aware of rumours that he had attacked a girl. The KC said these were 'rumours the defendants believed'. He said the kidnapping and murder were 'inextricably linked' and he was taken away so that 'at very least really serious harm could be done to him'.

Defensive injuries showed 'he had ben fighting for his life but he had been overwhelmed by his attackers… and died shortly after the attack'.
