A 20-year-old man was successfully rescued from a cave system in Fermanagh after becoming fatigued during a caving trip. It took over 20 volunteers from the Irish Cave Rescue Organisation (ICRO) more than six hours to bring him to safety.

A man in his 20s was safely rescued from a cave system in Fermanagh after a six-hour operation that involved over 20 volunteers. The rescue began around 9 pm last night on the north side of Cuilcagh Mountain and concluded at 4 am today. The man, who was on a planned caving trip, became too fatigued to continue on his return journey. Initially, five volunteers from the Irish Cave Rescue Organisation (ICRO) responded to the alarm raised around 8:30 pm.

Their initial attempts to assist the stranded caver were unsuccessful, prompting a wider call for volunteers across the country at approximately 10:45 pm. Thankfully, the man was not injured and was successfully brought to the surface around 3:15 am. The rescue operation was officially concluded around 45 minutes later. Stephen McCullagh, chair of ICRO, praised the successful rescue effort, stating that the initial response by local wardens, who are highly experienced in rescue, was crucial. He explained that the situation required a larger contingent of volunteers to engineer a safer exit route. This allowed the caved-in individual to be vertically hauled to the surface using ropes. More than 20 ICRO volunteers from both north and south of the border attended the rescue, including teams from Larne, Belfast, Dublin, and Co Clare. The ICRO, a specialized all-Ireland volunteer rescue team for underground environments, operates from bases in Clare and Fermanagh. They respond to incidents in caves, potholes, and abandoned mines upon request from An Garda Síochána or the PSNI. The core team comprises around 60 experienced cavers who have undergone rigorous training in rescue techniques, encompassing first aid, underground casualty care, rescue rigging, communications, and incident management.
