They had downed a large amount of whiskey

A housemate was stabbed twice after an argument broke out in a kitchen. Florentin Spirea, 46, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding following the attack on June 22, 2021, in Burlington Avenue, Langwith Junction, Shirebrook.

Spirea and his victim were living in a shared house with two other men. Each had their own bedroom but shared the common living space including the kitchen, Nottingham Crown Court heard on Monday . The attack happened after Spirea and the victim were drinking together - on Spirea's account "a large quantity of whiskey". They argued and scuffled together, before Spirea was pushed against a cutlery drawer.Spirea reached into the drawer, grabbed a large kitchen knife with a 13-centimetre blade, and stabbed his housemate in an act the prosecution accepted was "over-the-top self-defence," said Katya Saudek, prosecuting.

The man was injured to his right shoulder and the back of his right thigh - wounds which were closed in hospital. On his arrest, Spirea, 46, who has no previous convictions, said the victim was trying to kill him and he acted in self-defence. Judge Nirmal Shant KC, the Recorder of Nottingham, made a three-year restraining order on Spirea to stay away from his victim, and 21 months in custody - with 241 days to be deducted for his time on a supervised monitored curfew.
