Man suspected of stealing van struck on SR-94 in Lemon Grove while running from officers [Breaking]
A suspected car thief suffered serious injuries late Tuesday when he was struck by a car while running across state Route 94 in Lemon Grove as he was trying to elude officers, officials said.
The man was hit around 7:45 p.m. on west SR-94 near Lemon Grove Avenue shortly after he got into a disabled van parked on the side of the freeway and drove it about a half mile, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grieshaber. The owner of the van had called 911 to report someone had gotten into his vehicle after he left it on the shoulder of SR-94 near SR-125. As officers arrived, the man took off driving.The man pulled over near the Lemon Grove Avenue exit and ran as officers approached, first running south across all lanes of traffic on westbound and eastbound SR-94, Grieshaber said.
He then ran north across the lanes to the right shoulder. As an officer attempted to detain him, he again ran south into the westbound lanes, this time directly into the path of a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 77-year-old La Mesa woman, Grieshaber said. CHP officers provided medical aid to the injured man, who was left unconscious. He was transported to a hospital with major injuries.The driver of the Toyota stopped after the crash and cooperated with investigators. CHP officers determined she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision.
