A 28-year-old man from Dublin underwent a leg-lengthening surgery in Turkey, increasing his height from 5ft 7in to 5ft 11in. He secured a bank loan to finance the €23,000 procedure and spent 18 months recovering, relying on a wheelchair and crutches.
A man standing at 5ft 7in travelled to Turkey for €23,000 leg-lengthening surgery that involved breaking both his legs - and he's now 5ft 11in.
Marius Gros, 28, began looking into the procedure after stumbling upon a TikTok video about someone undergoing the treatment. The operation involves breaking the leg bones and attaching an external metal frame, which is gradually adjusted multiple times so the bones heal back longer than before. Marius, who lives in Dublin, secured an appointment at a Turkish clinic offering the procedure and then financed it through a bank loan.
Following the operation, he awoke with the frames attached to his legs and spent the subsequent months with limited mobility while his legs were progressively lengthened. He relied on a wheelchair and crutches during recovery, and underwent regular physiotherapy sessions to rebuild his strength. Now, 18 months later, Marius has reached 5ft 11in and is fully recovered, expressing his delight with the results. Marius, who documents his experience on TikTok @mariusgros1111, said: "I always wanted to be taller.
"I saw the surgery in the USA for up to $200,000, so when I asked the Turkish clinic their cost, I thought it was reasonable. Two weeks later, I was ready with a loan from the bank.
"I wasn't really nervous until an hour before the surgery - I knew it would be painful, but it would be worth it in the end. When I first woke up, the pain was really bad. But I became a bit numb from the painkillers. The first two weeks after the surgery were painful, I couldn't really move and mostly just lay in bed.
"As time went on, I noticed the changes slowly - things like using the coffee machine or microwave, my point of view changed and I had to lower my hand more to use it. People online told me I'd never walk again, but I knew my own strength, and it was worth it.
" Marius revealed that he had always been a devoted gym enthusiast who also trained in Muay Thai, and while he felt comfortable in his own skin, he had long harboured a desire to add a few inches to his frame. After stumbling across a video of another man who had undergone the same procedure, he began to explore the possibility for himself.
He said: "The average height in Ireland where I live seems to be higher than in Romania, where I'm from. In Ireland the men are mostly 5ft 11in or 6ft and I felt short when I was out on the street.
" After scouring the globe for a suitable clinic, he settled on the Wanna Be Taller clinic in Istanbul, where he went under the knife on January 29, 2025. During the operation, his femurs, or thigh bones, were broken and metal structures were fitted to them. Upon regaining consciousness, he was required to turn a screw on the metal structures four times daily, gradually widening the gap by 1mm each time.
He said: "The pain was really bad at first, because they wait for you to wake from the anaesthesia to give you painkillers.
"I woke up the same height, but every day I had to twist it four times. The twisting wasn't painful, but I had bruises and nerve pain from the broken bone.
"It wasn't easy but I was numb from the painkillers, although moving legs when they are broken is a bit weird. " He was hospitalised for four days before spending a further 11 days at a nearby hotel, where physiotherapy sessions taught him crucial exercises and nurses tended to his bandages. Upon his return to Ireland, he was confined to a wheelchair and unable to work for a total of four months.
Marius explained: "I started to be able to walk short distances with a walker or crutches.
"I knew I wouldn't hit the gym as much or be as active as before, so it wasn't a shock I lost some muscle mass. " However, as time passed, he noticed his height creeping upwards. He recalled: "My brother is 5ft 9in, every time I saw him, we'd measure me against him and saw me getting closer to his height.
" By May 2025, the lengthening process had concluded, leaving him approximately 4in taller. He progressively rebuilt his strength until walking became possible again, extending the time he could remain upright each day. He described the process: "It was just about being patient, walking from the bedroom to the kitchen to make myself porridge.
"Taking the dog outside, or going for a short walk with my girlfriend using crutches. After a month I started taking steps with one crutch, and then slowly, slowly I got back to normal. "
