Old Trafford is a 114-year-old stadium but Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to knock it down and rebuild a new stadium on the same site.
Manchester United intend to submit plans for a 100,000-all-seater new-build stadium by the end of the year.
Ratcliffe wants United to have the biggest stadium in Britain and the club are optimistic they could build one that hosts at least 90,000 fans but could expand to 100,000. Old Trafford currently holds 75,000.READ MORE: What Ratcliffe said about rebuilding Old Trafford A combination of public and private funding could finance the stadium, with new prime minister Sir Keir Starmer open to conversations around government support for wider transport links.
United have surveyed 30,000 fans and it is understood there was roughly a 50-50 split between those in favour of a new-build and a redevelopment of Old Trafford. United have set up a sub-task force that former captain Gary Neville will sit on, along with Manchester United Supporters' Trust chief executive Duncan Drasdo.
As the Manchester Evening News has previously reported, redeveloping Old Trafford would be more time-consuming and the cost could be similar to building a new stadium. United could rebuild the stadium without having to play elsewhere. Redeveloping Old Trafford would be off-putting due to the reduced capacities, disappointing thousands of season-ticket holders. United's revenues would also be adversely affected.
