Sven had signed on the dotted line to take charge at Ewood Park
Sven Goran-Eriksson came close to joining Manchester United and Chelsea as manager during his career but it was Blackburn Rovers who got the closest to securing the Swede's services.After four successful years at Sampdoria, which included the 1994 Coppa Italia triumph, Eriksson was approached by then Rovers owner Jack Walker following the dismissal of Ray Harford after a dismal start to the season.
Despite already signing a pre-contractual agreement, Walker allowed Eriksson to join Lazio without seeking any compensation and Rovers went onto appoint Roy Hodgson as their next manager. He went on to become England manager and was close to replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford before the Scot did a u-turn on plans to retire.
The story of Sven almost arriving at Ewood Park is well known and four years ago, Eriksson reflected on that dramatic period and insisted that he will forever be grateful to Rovers for giving him the opportunity to stay in Italy.
